” And then came the wall. And for us here in Eastern Berlin, it was finished, gay life. The bars, closed. Personal advertisements in the paper, cancelled. No place to meet but the tramway stations and the public toilets. We were not supposed to exist. Persona non grata. So I thought to give homosexual men and women community in this house” Charlotte Von Malhsdorf, I am my own Wife.
Since the early 1900′s ‘The Mulack Ritze’ cabaret thrived as a vibrant nucleus for Berlin’s queer community, attracting celebrities such as Marlene Dietrich and Bertolt Brecht. It survived under Nazi and then Soviet rule until 1963 when the Stasi ordered it’s demolition and forced the scene to go further underground or to flee to the West.
Thanks to Charlotte von Malhsdorf, the bar and it’s entire contents were relocated and operated in secret out of the basement of her home- The Grunderzeit Museum in Berlin-Malhsdorf for almost thirty years. Charlotte, herself, lived openly as a transvestite, bravely challenging two of the most oppressive regimes in history and lived to tell the tale.
The Black Box will channel this spirit of freedom, love and revolution by transforming into ‘The Mulack Ritze’ and celebrating a place where a community of outsiders found expression, strength and pride in a world of their own creating. One half of Go Bang! Claire Hall will provide the tunes and ingredients to keep you entertained!
